So what's so great about Sri Lanka? |
|
Famous sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke, who resides in the island, once wrote "It may well be that each of Sri Lanka's attractions is surpassed somewhere on Earth; Cambodia may have more impressive ruins, Tahiti lovelier beaches, Bali more beautiful landscapes (though I doubt it), Thailand more charming people (ditto). But I find it hard to believe that there is any country which scores so highly in all departments - which has so many advantages and so few disadvantages, especially for the western visitor." For a country of that size (about the size of West Virginia or Ireland) things one can do are amazing: surfing, wind surfing, scuba diving, rock/mountain climbing, searching for ancient ruins, wildlife, corral reefs, gemstones, spices, rituals.

What is the security situation? |
|
Sri Lanka is a presidential parliamentary democracy with a developing
economy. Civil war and terrorism had seriously disrupted the country since
1983. However, on May 19, 2009, the Sri Lankan government declared
victory after more than 26 years of civil conflict with the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), an armed separatist group, which remains on
the U.S. list of designated terrorist organizations
Despite the improved security situation, the Sri Lankan government
continues to restrict travel in the Northern Province (the former center
of the Tamil separatist insurgency), as does the U.S. Embassy for its
employees. Foreigners, including U.S. embassy personnel, require advance
permission from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence to visit the northern
areas. Due to such travel restrictions, consular services to U.S.
citizens in the northern part of the country may be delayed. |

What are the different means of travel within Sri Lanka? |
Travel within Sri Lanka can be done cheaply by train. Air-conditioned Japanese cars are commonly available and not too costly - but driving in Sri Lanka is a nightmare. Being a small country almost any city can be reached by car within 6 hours from the airport. Travel by bus is very uncomfortable and not recommended. |

What kind of food will be available for me in Sri Lanka? |
Sri Lankans traditionally eat rice and curry all the time . However plenty of Chinese Restaurants dot the countryside. And in the resorts Continental Food is also served in many hotels and Restaurants.
In Colombo it's possible to find at least one restaurant serving food from almost any country in the world.
And then there is KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonalds. |
